SkinPen Microneedling in Cambridge: How It Works, Benefits & What to Expect

If you're looking to improve the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines, uneven texture or stretch marks, SkinPen microneedling could be a treatment worth considering.

At Cambridge Cosmetics & Aesthetics, we use SkinPen to stimulate the skin’s natural healing response and encourage collagen production, helping to improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin over time.

What Is SkinPen?

SkinPen is a professional microneedling treatment that uses a device containing very fine needles to create controlled micro channels in the skin.

These tiny channels stimulate the body's natural repair process, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin. As the skin heals and remodels, this can help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, acne scarring, enlarged-looking pores and certain types of scarring.

Unlike treatments that simply work on the surface of the skin, SkinPen works by stimulating your skin's own natural regeneration process.

What Can SkinPen Help With?

SkinPen can be used to target a range of common skin concerns, including:

  1. Acne scarring
  2. Fine lines and wrinkles
  3. Uneven skin texture
  4. Enlarged-looking pores
  5. Certain types of scarring
  6. Stretch marks
  7. General skin rejuvenation

The treatment can be tailored to the individual, depending on the area being treated and the concerns you would like to address.

How Does SkinPen Work?

During treatment, the SkinPen device is carefully moved across the skin, creating controlled micro-injuries.

This triggers the skin's natural wound healing response. As part of this process, collagen and elastin production are stimulated, helping the skin gradually become smoother and more refined.

The results aren't instant because the skin needs time to repair and remodel. This means improvements can continue to develop in the weeks following treatment.

SkinPen for Acne Scarring

Acne scars can remain long after active acne has cleared and can affect both the texture and appearance of the skin.

SkinPen can help improve the appearance of certain types of acne scarring by stimulating collagen production and encouraging the skin to remodel.

For acne scarring, we generally recommend a course of treatments rather than a single session, although the number of treatments required will depend on your individual skin and the type and severity of your scarring.

SkinPen for Stretch Marks

SkinPen can also be used to target certain types of stretch marks.

By stimulating collagen production and the skin's natural repair process, microneedling can help improve the appearance and texture of the treated area.

Stretch marks can be more complex to treat, so we recommend an individual consultation so we can assess the area and discuss whether SkinPen is suitable for you.

How Many SkinPen Treatments Will I Need?

There isn't a one size fits all treatment plan.

The number of sessions you'll need depends on what you're treating and how your skin responds.

For some concerns, a course of at least three treatments may be recommended before we reassess your progress. Your treatments will be appropriately spaced to allow your skin time to recover and begin the collagen remodelling process.

We also recommend taking before and after photographs throughout your treatment journey so that your progress can be monitored over time.

What Does SkinPen Feel Like?

SkinPen can feel like a light scratching or vibrating sensation as the device moves across the skin.

Your practitioner will ensure the treatment is carried out as comfortably as possible and will adjust the treatment according to the area being treated and your individual needs.

Immediately afterwards, your skin may appear red and feel warm or sensitive, similar to mild sunburn. This is a normal response following microneedling.

What Is the Downtime?

One of the benefits of SkinPen is that there is relatively little downtime compared with some more invasive skin treatments.

You can expect some redness, warmth and sensitivity following your treatment. This usually settles as the skin begins to recover.

Your practitioner will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions. Avoiding sun exposure for at least 72 hours following treatment is particularly important, and you should follow all aftercare advice provided.

When Will I See Results?

SkinPen results develop gradually rather than immediately.

As your skin repairs itself and new collagen is produced, you may begin to notice improvements in texture and overall skin quality.

Because collagen remodelling takes time, your skin can continue to improve following your treatment course.

Is SkinPen Suitable for Everyone?

Microneedling isn't suitable for everyone, which is why an assessment is important before treatment.

We'll discuss your skin, medical history, current skincare and the concerns you'd like to address before recommending SkinPen.

Your treatment plan will be personalised to your skin and your goals.
